A Passion for Gardening: 20 Years and Counting
For the past nearly 20 years gardening has been my passion. I think part of the reason for this is because gardening is such a broad, rich concept, and it offers such a diverse range of interesting work.
Just think about it for a minute. How do you see gardening? Some may see it as merely weeding a garden or mowing the lawn. However, when you look a bit deeper into the meaning of gardening, it offers so much more than merely doing a chore.
For instance, fruit trees and the four seasons of management provide many hours of enjoyable work for me. Irrigation systems are an important part of gardening and I have spent many rewarding hours modifying systems and repairing worn-out components. Others see gardening as planting their veggie crop in raised garden beds and derive great joy from that. Still others enjoy planting colourful window boxes to greet their guests as they come to the front door. The sky is the limit really, and that’s because, under the open skies, the garden offers an expression for our imaginations, an outlet for our creativity. Whether it’s a pastime or a job, a hobby or a sense of calling, gardening also offers fresh air, colour, and the sweet smell of the earth.
